”I found that I not only tolerated taking risks, I loved it.” – William E. Simon
I was 22 years old when I packed up majority of my belongings and moved to another country. From the safe haven of Canada, I moved with my partner to jolly-old England, for various reasons. Life at home had me feeling like a prince! I didn’t have to pay for a lot of the things my other friends had to – my parents really ensured that my life would be as comfortable as possible in my young age.
So why would I move to England?
Well, mentally, I felt stagnant. Yes, I had goals and aspirations, I did travel almost every year with my family, and I had access to a lot of resources, so I wasn’t tight for opportunities. What had happened was that I got too comfortable. I had taken risks in my life, but they were still fairly safe when you evaluate why I felt comfortable taking them. I knew that I needed to take more risks in order to almost be deserving of what I have aspired to do.
If you can take the chance of moving to another country, you will have proved to yourself consciously and subconsciously that you can do anything! If you do it right, you will have no desire to ever go back to your old way of life. The problem with most of us is that we get to comfortable with being ‘safe’. We get a ‘safe’ job, ‘safe’ spouse, ‘safe’ goals, safe’ everything. If you are unable to fight for what you believe in even though others around you are calling you crazy for your ambition and risk, you will not be successful.
The best things that have happened to me in my life took place once I left my safety net and stepped out of my home – and home country. How do you expect to meet interesting people when you are surrounded by ‘safe’ people? So many people are in fear of leaving their home and of the unknown. The most successful people had to leave their home! People are willing to take flights to see their favorite musician in concert but they are afraid to travel to another country for more than just a ‘break from work’. That is pathetic! The things that make you sweat the most will likely be the best decision you will have made.
Before I even had the intention of moving out, I had so many posters and other things on my bedroom walls. For some reason, I felt like I needed a clearing, so I tore down everything on those walls. To me, the cluttered walls represented my safety net. You could barely see the wall because I had things covering it. Once I cleared those walls, white never seemed so beautiful. Once I cleared those walls, I was able to think deeper and broader because subconsciously, I had a clean canvas! A year later, I was on a plane to the next level of my life.
We have all heard those who are older than us making excuses as to why they didn’t do this or that. Don’t fall into their category. You will wake up one day old and grey saying ‘I wonder what would have happened if I took that risk’. Regardless, it will be too late. Instead, take all the risks now. You will be fine. It is better to be unsuccessful at something than to wonder for decades what would have happened if you just tried. It may be the one step that comes before everything you have ever wanted.
So please consider moving to another country, maybe even just another city. Spend your money on experiences, not just things. Netflix is great, but it makes you even more comfortable at home. Put that series of yours down and step outside for once! Mentally and physically! Travelling is an asset. And it is not an expensive one when you are ambitious and have goals that exceed those around you.
Until next time,
